Why Do Men Want to Be Cuckolds? Seven Honest Reasons

By Juliet Monroe · updated 2026-10-16 · 6 min read

why do men want to be cuckolds
Men want to be cuckolds for several overlapping reasons: jealousy that converts into arousal, compersion, voyeurism, devotion to a desired wife, surrender of control, the thrill of rivalry, and the intimacy of being told everything. Most men carry two or three motives at once, and none of them is a defect.

Why do men want to be cuckolds? Because several different things in the human mind can be wired to the same picture: his wife, desired by another man, and him knowing about it. Different men enter through different doors. Below are the seven I hear about most, written by a hotwife who has read a great many confessions and recorded a great many sessions for husbands.

This is common knowledge about the kink, not clinical research and not a diagnosis. Where I describe what scientists have observed, I keep to broad, well-known findings and nothing precise enough to need a footnote.

The seven reasons

Each has its own flavour, and most men recognise themselves in more than one.

1. Jealousy that turns into arousal

Jealousy and arousal share a lot of the same physical machinery: racing heart, heat in the chest, hyper-focus, a rush of attention toward the partner. In most relationships that rush is unpleasant, so we avoid the trigger. Some men notice that in a safe context the same rush feels electric instead of painful.

That is the single most common story. He imagines her with someone, feels the sting, and then discovers that the sting is exciting. The more he is told it is allowed, the hotter the sting becomes. If this sounds like you, cuckold jealousy and compersion has exercises for working with it deliberately.

2. Compersion

Compersion is the opposite of jealousy: happiness at a partner's happiness, even when it comes from someone else. The compersion entry explains it in a paragraph. For many husbands the real pleasure is watching her glow. She comes home flushed, talkative, confident and generous, and he is delighted that she had that. The bull is almost incidental, a source of the glow.

Men who are driven mainly by compersion tend to be the gentlest cuckolds, and they often prefer stories where she is affectionate afterwards. They are also the ones who most quickly outgrow humiliation scenes.

3. Humiliation and being replaced

Some men are aroused by feeling lesser, smaller, left out. The comparison with a bull, the teasing about size, the idea of being the one who waits while someone else is chosen: these are the ingredients. I have a full guide on cuckold humiliation, because the word covers everything from a raised eyebrow to a long scripted scene.

The key point: in the kink the humiliation is requested and bounded. He wants to feel small and still be loved, which is a very different thing from being made small.

4. Voyeurism

Watching is its own pleasure. Plenty of men do not want to be humiliated at all; they want to see, hear or imagine her with someone, and to be passive observers. The cuck chair exists for this: a seat, a rule, and the discipline of looking without touching. Voyeurs often enjoy audio the most, because sound without picture lets the imagination direct the scene.

5. Devotion and worship

There is a quieter motive that rarely gets talked about: he adores her, and wants to see her treated like the prize she is. If she is desired by confident men, then his devotion has meaning, because he is serving a woman who has options. This is the husband who says "she deserves it" before he says anything about himself.

My Queen of Spades affirmations are written for this man. They put the pride in the foreground, and the arousal follows.

6. Rivalry and the "competition" arousal

Evolutionary psychologists have long discussed a pattern sometimes called sperm competition arousal: in studies, some men respond more strongly to sexual images that suggest another man is present than to images of a single couple. Whether or not you buy the biological story, the response is easy to recognise. There is a second man in the picture, and a part of the brain wakes up and takes notice.

The caution I would add is that this is a description of a common response, not a destiny. Plenty of men have it and never act on it.

7. Surrender of control

Many cuckolds are, in their ordinary lives, the people who decide things: managers, fathers, the one who is always on call. The fantasy offers an hour where nothing is his to decide. She decides what he hears, what he is allowed, when he may touch. The relief is real. This is also why chastity and denial sit so comfortably beside cuckolding, which the cuckold chastity guide covers.

How the motives combine

How the motives combine, Juliet Monroe

Most men are not one thing. A husband might be 50 percent voyeur, 30 percent worshipper, and 20 percent humiliation-curious. Mapping your mix is useful, because it points you to the right kind of session and the right kind of arrangement.

What this does not mean

Questions to ask yourself

Questions to ask yourself, Juliet Monroe

Take ten minutes with a notebook.

  1. Which moment in the fantasy produces the strongest reaction: the leaving, the watching, the aftermath, the telling?
  2. When I imagine it, am I proud, ashamed, or both?
  3. Is the bull a person, a faceless idea, or a voice?
  4. What would I want her to say to me afterwards?
  5. What would make me want to stop?

Your answers are a map. If you want a fuller self-check, work through the am I a cuckold test and take the results to a conversation with your wife. For the mind behind the motives, read cuckold psychology.

What the wives say

Husbands ask me this question. Wives ask a different one: "Why does he want this and what does it say about how he sees me?" The honest answer, in most cases, is that it says he sees you as extraordinary. A man who feels no desire for his wife's desirability would not be drawn to the fantasy at all. The fantasy needs her to be wanted, and he needs to be able to feel that too.

Three things wives often report finding when they discuss this openly:

How long the interest lasts

How long the interest lasts, Juliet Monroe

Interests like this tend to follow one of three courses. Some men carry the fantasy for life at about the same size. Some find that it grows in intensity for a year or two and then settles. Some find it was tied to a particular season of life, such as a stressful job or a relationship milestone, and it fades. None of these is better than another. If you want to keep the interest alive without letting it take over, use short, regular sessions and keep other pleasures in the week as well.

Using the motive map in practice

Once you know your dominant motive, adapt the practice to it.

  1. Jealousy-led: choose texts and talk that mention another man lightly. Do not escalate on the same night.
  2. Compersion-led: ask for a debrief that lasts longer than the event itself.
  3. Humiliation-led: agree the words that are off the table before you agree the words that are on it.
  4. Voyeur-led: keep your hands where the rules say, and let the rule be the pleasure.
  5. Devotion-led: build a ritual of thanks, such as touching the ring and saying a fixed phrase.
  6. Control-led: pair it with chastity or denial, where the lock is the visible sign of surrender.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some men get turned on by their wife being with another man?

Common drivers are jealousy converting into arousal, compersion, voyeurism, devotion to a desired wife, rivalry arousal and surrender of control. Most men have a mix of two or three. None of this indicates a problem, provided everything stays consensual.

Is wanting to be a cuckold a mental illness?

No. It is a common sexual interest, and sexual interests that involve consenting adults and cause no distress are not disorders. If a fantasy causes you real anguish or compels you to act against your partner's wishes, a sex-positive therapist can help.

Does wanting to be a cuckold mean I am insecure?

Not necessarily. Some men are insecure and some are extremely confident. Confident men often enjoy the fantasy because it feels safe to play at being replaced. What matters is whether you can enjoy it without needing it to prove anything.

Is cuckolding about the husband or the wife?

Both, but the husband usually supplies the wish and the wife supplies the power. A good arrangement is exciting to both of them for different reasons. If only one person is enjoying it, it needs a conversation.

Can a man stop wanting to be a cuckold?

Interests fade or shift over time, but they rarely vanish on command. The practical approach is to decide how much of the fantasy you want in your life, keep it at that size, and be honest with your partner about it.
