Compersion: meaning

Also: frubble, sympathetic joy

Compersion: Compersion means the happiness and warmth you feel when your partner enjoys something with someone else. It is often described as the opposite of jealousy, though both can be felt together. The word comes from polyamorous communities and is common in hotwife and cuckold circles.

Compersion is the feeling of joy at your partner's joy, even when that joy comes from someone else. For many husbands in cuckold and hotwife marriages it is the emotion that turns a risky idea into a good one.

Where the word comes from

It was coined in the 1990s in a polyamorous community in California as a counterpart to jealousy, and it spread through open-relationship writing. A related word, "frubble", means roughly the same and is used by some groups. The concept is older than the term: parents feel it when their child succeeds, friends feel it at a wedding.

The two can be present in the same moment. Many husbands describe a mixed state: a pang followed by a rush of tenderness. That mixture is exactly what cuckold and stag fantasies play with.

How compersion shows up

It does not mean you never feel envy. It means envy is not the only note.

Can you learn it?

Not as a switch, but as a practice. Useful steps:

  1. Name the feeling when it appears, aloud if you can.
  2. Ask what she enjoyed, and listen without correcting.
  3. Notice the body: jealousy tightens, compersion opens.
  4. Repeat small exposures, such as audio, reading or flirting, before larger ones.
  5. Reflect after each experience and write down what felt warm.

Cuckold Jealousy has exercises in more detail, and Communication in Open Relationships gives a weekly check-in that makes space for both feelings.

Why audio helps

A recorded session lets you feel compersion with no real event attached. In Queen of Spades Affirmations: Turn Your Jealousy Into Pride, you repeat lines that move the emotion from envy to pride, one at a time, at your own pace. It is a free practice, and it pairs well with the Start Here course.

What compersion is not

It is not an obligation. Some people never feel it and still have good open marriages. It is not proof of love, and it should never be performed for a partner who needs reassurance more than a show. And it is not the same as indifference; indifference does not feel anything at all.

One-line version: Compersion: the joy you feel at your partner's pleasure with someone else; the emotional opposite of jealousy.

Frequently asked questions

Is compersion the opposite of jealousy?

It is commonly described that way, but the two can coexist. Compersion is feeling happy at a partner's happiness with someone else, while jealousy centres on fear of loss. Many people feel both in sequence or at once.

Can compersion be learned?

Often, gradually. People build it through honest talk, small exposures, reflecting on what felt good and not forcing a response. It cannot be faked reliably, and forcing it tends to backfire.

Does everyone in an open relationship feel compersion?

No. Some never do and still maintain stable, honest arrangements. Compersion is a pleasant bonus, not a requirement. What matters is trust, communication and the absence of coercion.
