Metamour: meaning
Also: metamours, partner's partner

A metamour is the other partner of your partner. The prefix "meta" means "beside" or "beyond", so the word describes someone beside you in a network. You did not choose this person and you are not their lover; you simply share someone.
Who counts
If your wife sees a bull, the bull is your metamour and you are his. If your wife's bull also has a girlfriend, she is your partner's partner's partner, sometimes called a "telemour" or a "meta-metamour". Most people stop using titles after the first step and use first names.
Why the word is useful

Without a word, people reach for "rival", "other man", or "the competition". Those words build tension. Metamour is neutral. It names the relationship without a rank. For a husband, hearing himself call the bull his metamour can soften the sting of jealousy, because it places him in a known pattern rather than a private shame.
Metamour relationships come in a range
- Strangers: you do not meet and rarely talk about each other
- Cordial: you have met, you are polite and you share only logistics
- Friends: you enjoy each other's company and might spend time together
- Conflict: you dislike each other and the partner has to manage it
Nobody has to be friends. The only requirement is basic respect and that each person keep promises to the shared partner.
The husband and the bull

In a hotwife or cuckold setup, the metamour bond has a charge that general polyamory advice does not cover. The husband might feel envy, arousal, or both. The bull might feel curiosity or discomfort. The wife stands between them.
Useful habits:
- Meet once before the first date, in public, to settle nerves
- Agree on contact: can the two men text? Should they?
- Share logistics, not intimate details, unless both are happy to
- Respect the marriage: the bull does not give orders to the husband unless that is a negotiated role-play
- Check in with your wife, not with each other, when something is wrong
For role-play dynamics where the bull teases or commands the husband, make the permissions explicit. See what makes a good bull and bull rules.
When the bond goes bad
If the husband cannot stand the bull, or the bull resents the husband, the wife ends up doing emotional work for both. Pause the arrangement before it becomes a resentment. A short break is better than a long fight, and my notes on taking a break from hotwifing can help.
Metamours in related terms
The idea has its home in polyamory and shows up in kitchen table polyamory, where metamours are friends. In a primary partner structure, the husband is the primary and the bull is a secondary, although many couples reject those labels.
Using it in fantasy
Some listeners enjoy hearing the word used in role-play: a wife who calls the bull "my husband's metamour" with a teasing smile is making the arrangement sound polite and sensual at once. If you like that tone, begin with the free Start Here course, which builds the three-person dynamic gently, one session at a time.
Examples in a sentence
- He and his wife's boyfriend were metamours who sometimes watched football together.
- She asked her metamour to text her, not her husband.
- They were polite metamours who met once at a restaurant.
Frequently asked questions
Is the bull my metamour?
Yes. If he is your wife's partner and you are her husband, the two of you are each other's metamours. The word fits whether he is a one-time encounter or a regular, though many couples reserve it for ongoing arrangements.
Do metamours have to be friends?
No. A respectful, cordial bond is enough. Some metamours become friends, and some barely meet. What matters is that each keeps agreements with the shared partner and treats the other with basic courtesy.
How do you handle jealousy of a metamour?
Name it, talk about it with your partner and look for the specific trigger. Jealousy is information, not an order. Practicing compersion, setting contact limits and asking for reassurance often help, and a short break is fine if the feeling is too strong.
