Polyamory: meaning
Also: poly, polyamorous, consensual non-monogamy poly

Polyamory means loving more than one person, openly. It is built on honesty and consent: everyone knows about the other relationships, and each person agrees to the arrangement. The word comes from Greek "poly" (many) and Latin "amor" (love).
What defines it
- Multiple relationships that may be romantic, emotional and sexual
- Transparency: no one is cheated or deceived
- Consent that can be revised at any time
- Emotional commitment rather than casual contact alone
Polyamory has many shapes. Some people have a primary partner and secondary ones; others have equal relationships; some live as a group. See primary partner for the hierarchy question.
Polyamory compared with other terms
| Term | Focus | Emotional bond with others? |
|---|---|---|
| Polyamory | Love and connection | Yes, often |
| Swinging | Shared sexual play, usually as a couple | Rarely |
| Hotwifing | Wife has encounters, husband enjoys it | Usually kept light |
| Cuckolding | Husband's arousal at wife's encounters, often with a power twist | Varies |
| Open relationship | Freedom to see others | Varies |
The line between hotwifing and polyamory is the emotional layer. A hotwife may adore her bull's body and company but keep her heart with her husband. A polyamorous woman may fall in love with a second partner and treat him as a partner in his own right.
Why people confuse them
Both involve a married woman with another man. Both require negotiation and honesty. But the purpose differs. Hotwifing is a sexual fantasy, usually with rules to preserve the marriage as the center. Polyamory is a relationship structure. Some couples do both: they begin as hotwife and move toward a looser poly style when feelings grow, and some moving this way is natural. Others strongly keep the line.
My guide on cuckolding versus polyamory compares the two in depth.
Common structures

- Hierarchical: a main couple with secondary partners
- Non-hierarchical, sometimes called relationship anarchy
- Solo poly: living independently with several partners
- Polyfidelity: a closed group
- Kitchen table polyamory: all partners are friends
Skills it demands
- Frank speech about needs, jealousy and time
- Calendar management, since there are more people to schedule
- Sexual health habits: testing, barriers, honest reports
- Handling compersion and jealousy as separate feelings
- Respect for each partner's autonomy
Is it right for a hotwife couple?

Only if both of you want it. If your fantasy is the sensation of waiting while she is with another man, you probably do not need a polyamory structure, and adding one can dilute the thing you love. If you want a larger family of partners, polyamory has a rich body of advice. A good test is to ask: do we want to love other people, or do we want to enjoy her being desired? The answers shape your rules, and my hotwife rules show how to write them.
Whichever you choose, talk it through slowly. The free Start Here course gives the listening side of the fantasy, while the ethical non-monogamy page maps the broader terrain.
Examples in a sentence
- They are polyamorous, and each partner knows the others.
- Polyamory was about love for them; hotwifing was about play.
- She told him she was polyamorous, not just curious about a bull.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between polyamory and hotwifing?
Polyamory is a structure for multiple loving relationships. Hotwifing is a fantasy and practice in which a wife has encounters, often with her husband's enthusiastic knowledge, and the marriage stays central. Polyamory stresses emotional bonds, while hotwifing usually stresses sexual play and the husband's reaction.
Is polyamory the same as cheating?
No. Cheating involves deception and broken agreements. Polyamory requires that everyone is informed and agrees. A polyamorous person who lies about a partner or breaks a rule is cheating the agreement, just as in any other relationship.
Can a hotwife couple become polyamorous?
Yes, if feelings develop and both agree to change the rules. Many couples start with sexual encounters, then find that a recurring bull becomes a friend or partner. Talk about it openly, update your agreement and check in often, because the shift changes the marriage dynamic.
