Wittol vs Cuckold: The Old Word for the Knowing Husband
By Juliet Monroe · updated 2026-10-18 · 3 min read

Wittol vs cuckold: a wittol is a husband who knows his wife is with another man and puts up with it, or enjoys it. A cuckold, in the strict old sense, is a husband whose wife is unfaithful without his knowledge. Seen that way, nearly everyone calling himself a cuckold today is a wittol with a more fashionable word.
Where the two words come from
Wittol has been in English since the fifteenth century. It was built from wit, meaning knowledge, plus the ending of cuckold, so it literally meant "one who knows he is a cuckold". Writers of the period used it as an insult: the husband who was not even offended. Cuckold came from the cuckoo, the bird that lays its eggs in other birds' nests, and it implied a man being fooled into raising someone else's child. The fuller story is in the history of the word cuckold.
Notice what the older vocabulary measured. It cared little about whether the wife enjoyed herself. It cared about the husband's knowledge and his reaction, and it ranked him by them.
The side-by-side
| Cuckold (strict old sense) | Wittol | |
|---|---|---|
| Does he know? | No | Yes |
| Did he agree? | No | Tolerated, or sometimes welcomed |
| Social label in old texts | A fool, mocked | A worse fool, mocked more |
| Closest modern match | A betrayed spouse | A consensual cuckold or hotwife husband |
| Emotional note | Humiliation when discovered | Acceptance, shame, or arousal |
Add one fact and the table becomes obvious: the modern kink community needs the wittol column and has been using the cuckold word for it. That is why the older sense still confuses newcomers. See also is cuckolding cheating for how consent changes the meaning.
Why every modern lifestyle cuckold is a wittol
Ask yourself three questions about the husband in a consensual arrangement:
- Does he know what his wife does? Yes.
- Has he accepted it? Yes, he agreed to it.
- Is it a secret from him? No, it is shared.
Those three answers are the dictionary meaning of wittol. So a man who says, "I am a cuckold, and my wife is a hotwife" is, in the old vocabulary, a wittol with his wife's permission to be one. The older idea of the cuckold as a man deceived only survives today in the word cheated.
Does it matter? Only if you enjoy precision, or if you are looking for a word that does not carry the sting of the original. Some men find wittol suits them better than cuckold. It is quieter, less loaded, and it centres knowledge and acceptance, which is the heart of the lifestyle.
How I use the words

In my sessions I use cuckold, because the husbands who find me use it, and the word has been reclaimed the way many insults are. The recordings never hide anything from you: you know what she is doing, you are told, you are asked to count, to wait, to say thank you. That is wittol territory, even when I call you by the other name. Does the label change anything in a marriage?
A little, yes. Language shapes the story a couple tells about itself.
- "Cuckold" suggests loss and ranking. It can heighten humiliation play, and some couples enjoy that very much.
- "Wittol" suggests knowledge and consent. It is a calm, even gentle, label that fits couples who want closeness over rank.
- "Hothusband" or "stag" suggest pride. See stag vs cuckold.
Try them on aloud. Whichever one makes your wife smile and you exhale is the right one for now. You can swap later.
Quick answer for a conversation

If someone asks you the difference: a cuckold is the husband who does not know; a wittol is the husband who does. Everyone in a consensual arrangement is the second kind, whatever they call themselves. For the rest of the vocabulary, the guide on types of cuckolds maps out the variations, and the free Start Here course gives you a first month of practice with a clear head.
Frequently asked questions
What is a wittol?
A wittol is a man who knows his wife is unfaithful and tolerates it. In modern use the word fits any husband who knows and agrees to his wife being with others, which makes it the more accurate label for a consensual cuckold.
Is a wittol the same as a cuckold?
In the strict old sense, no. A cuckold is unaware; a wittol knows. In everyday speech and in the lifestyle the two have merged, so cuckold usually means the knowing, consenting husband.
Is wittol an insult?
Historically it was a harsh one, meant to say a husband was both cheated on and complacent. Today it is mostly used as a precise or playful term, and some men like it because it implies knowledge and agreement rather than shame.
Why did the meaning of cuckold change?
Because consensual couples needed a word, and cuckold already carried the image of a husband and another man. Over time the kink community reclaimed it, stripped out the deception and kept the erotic charge.
