Conversational Hypnosis: meaning

Conversational hypnosis is hypnosis without the ceremony. No closed eyes, no countdown, no darkened room. Just a person talking in a way that slows you down and nudges your attention. It is rooted in the style of the psychiatrist Milton Erickson, whose indirect, story-based method showed that you can suggest without commanding.

The techniques

• Pacing and leading. State something true, then something slightly ahead: "You're sitting there, listening, and soon you'll feel more comfortable."
• Embedded commands. A suggestion tucked inside a sentence and marked with a slight change in tone.
• Presuppositions. "When you relax" assumes you will.
• Vague words. "Something pleasant" lets you supply your own meaning.
• Stories and metaphors. A tale that carries the point sideways.

None of these is a spell. They are ordinary rhetoric: a good salesman, therapist or storyteller uses them all.

What it can do

It can make a conversation feel calmer, make someone more open to an idea they already liked and add an erotic undertone to talk between lovers. It helps most when the other person is willing and relaxed. It does not work on someone who is alert, sceptical or refusing, and it works best when both people are enjoying the game and neither is trying to win.

What it cannot do

It cannot force obedience, it cannot hide itself from someone who is paying attention and it cannot make a person act against their values. Anyone selling "secret mind control in a chat" is overselling. The healthy form is play between adults who know the game.

In couples
