Should the Husband Meet the Bull First? Pros, Cons and a Format
By Juliet Monroe · updated 2026-10-18 · 6 min read

Should the husband meet the bull first? For most couples, yes. A short meeting with all three people before any date is the single best filter I know. It tells the husband whether he can stand next to this man, tells the wife how the bull behaves when someone is watching, and gives the bull a chance to see what kind of couple he has met. It is not compulsory, and some couples skip it. Below are the arguments both ways and a format that works.
The case for meeting first
- The husband gets information. Messages can be polished. A face, a handshake and a first sentence cannot. He can tell in minutes whether the man is warm, controlled, or performing.
- It removes a specific fear. The husband imagines the bull as a monster or a movie. A real person, with a real voice, is usually less threatening and more human, which makes everything easier.
- It tests respect. How does the bull treat the husband? Does he address both of you? Does he speak over him? That is the best predictor of how the dates will go.
- The wife sees the dynamic. She watches the two men together and learns if she feels safe. Her instinct counts for more than any checklist.
- It resets the power balance. The bull knows the husband is real and involved. Men who are only after a wife who "needs" them tend to show it quickly.
- It filters flakes. Someone who will not show up to a public coffee is someone who would not show up to anything else.
The case against

- Some husbands find it too much. For a shy husband, meeting the bull can create anxiety before the date and ruin the anticipation.
- It can kill the fantasy. If the fantasy relies on an anonymous figure, a human face changes the mood. That is a real trade-off.
- It is awkward for the bull. Some excellent bulls dislike the interview feel. A good one will do it anyway, but a few decline, and the decline is not always a flag.
- It can be a fake safeguard. A smooth conversation does not prove safety. You still need verification and testing; see how to vet a bull.
- It is a second logistics step. For couples who live far from each other, it adds travel.
If the husband genuinely does not want to, the couple can use a video call as a substitute. That keeps most of the benefit.
A format that works
Keep it short, public and low-stakes.
- Place. A café or hotel lobby bar, daytime or early evening, somewhere you could all leave in two minutes. See where to meet a bull for the first time for venue advice.
- Length. Thirty to sixty minutes. One drink each. No one orders a second unless all three want to.
- Arrival. The couple arrives separately from the bull, or earlier, so they have a seat with an easy exit.
- Opening. Talk about ordinary things first: work, travel, how they found each other. Five minutes of normal.
- The middle. A few questions each way, covered below.
- The close. One of the couple says, "We'll talk and message tomorrow." The bull says thanks. Nobody commits on the spot.
- After. The couple debrief within the hour, away from him, while impressions are fresh.
What the husband is checking for

A list for the husband to keep in his head. He does not need to interrogate. He only needs to watch.
| Signal | Good | Worrying |
|---|---|---|
| Eye contact | Includes both of you | Only looks at her |
| Talk about himself | Brief and consistent | Boasting or vague |
| Talk about you | Respectful, curious | Dismissive or flattering to the point of strange |
| Rules | Asks what yours are | Resists or negotiates the basics |
| Testing | Volunteers it or answers plainly | Evades |
| Pace | Relaxed, no pressure | Pushes for a date soon |
| Tone toward the wife | Warm and respectful | Over-familiar |
Trust a pattern, not a single moment. Nerves look like awkwardness; confidence can look like arrogance. Give him a few minutes to settle, and then watch what he does.
Questions worth asking
- "What are you looking for?" The answer should match what you want: occasional, discreet, respectful.
- "Have you done this with couples before?" And what went well or badly?
- "What do you need to feel comfortable?" A good bull has a view.
- "How do you feel about protection and testing?" The right answer is immediate and unfussy.
- "What would make you step back?" It shows whether he knows his own limits.
The wife should ask one or two of her own questions. She is the one who will be alone with him.
What the wife is checking for

She should be checking whether she is attracted, whether she feels at ease, and whether he treats her as a person. Chemistry is allowed to be modest at a coffee; safety is not. If something in her stomach says no, it is no, whether or not the husband sees why.
After the meeting
Debrief honestly and separately from his messages:
- Each of you says what you liked and what you did not.
- Each of you scores comfort from one to five. Anything below four needs a conversation.
- Agree whether to proceed, wait or decline.
- If you decline, use a polite template and do not explain at length.
A few ways this goes wrong
The husband performs. Some husbands overcompensate, trying to look relaxed, generous and unbothered. That hides real discomfort and sets up a bad night later. It is better to say, early, "I'm a little nervous, and I'm glad we're doing this slowly." A decent bull will respect that.
The bull performs. Some men are charming in a way that is all surface. Pay attention to how he treats the waiter, how he handles a silence, and whether he asks any question that is not about himself.
The wife is sidelined. Two men talking over her is a poor start. If it happens, she should steer the conversation back, and the husband should help her do it.
Everyone says yes to be polite. Agree before the meeting that "we'll let you know" is the default ending. Nobody should commit to a date inside the first meeting, however well it goes.
If you meet and decide not to proceed
Send a short message within a day. Thank him, say it is not the right fit, and do not describe why. A bull worth meeting accepts a clean no; a bull who argues has just answered your main question. If you are unsure how to word it, the guide on how to turn down a bull has templates.
What to wear and say for a first meeting
Dress as you would for a nice dinner, not as for a date. The wife should wear something she feels confident in but not a costume; a first meeting that looks like an audition puts pressure on everyone. The husband should dress cleanly and well, because he is the one sitting beside her, and how he feels about himself affects how the bull reads the room.
Say your names, say the limit of the evening ("we have until nine"), and say what you are hoping to learn. Being plain is not rude; it is the quickest way to set the tone. A bull who answers plainly in return is worth pursuing. If you are rehearsing, a spoken script such as the bull introduction role-play lets you practise the first minute so the nerves do not take over.
How the husband can stay steady
Breathe slowly and keep your shoulders low. Put the phone away, and keep your hands busy with a glass. If the feeling gets too big, you can say, "Give me a moment," and step outside. You are allowed to leave, and the wife has agreed in advance to follow or stay as you decided. Having that exit plan beforehand is what makes it possible to stay. Many husbands report that the first five minutes are the worst and the rest becomes surprisingly ordinary.
When skipping is fine

- A video call or voice call covers most of it.
- The couple has a long track record and a trusted introduction.
- The husband prefers to remain anonymous for the fantasy and the wife is meeting someone vetted.
In those cases, agree on the substitute. Do not agree on nothing. For fantasy preparation before the meeting, my free Start Here path helps many husbands settle their nerves. Just Watch is built around the feeling of sitting still while she leads.
Frequently asked questions
Do all couples meet the bull together first?
No, but most experienced couples do. A short, public meeting lets the husband and wife assess respect and chemistry before anything private. Couples who skip it usually substitute a video call or a trusted introduction.
What if the husband feels jealous at the meeting?
That is normal. Keep the meeting short, stay in a public place and use the debrief to talk it through. If the jealousy is overwhelming, it is useful information about pacing.
How long should a first meeting with the bull last?
Thirty to sixty minutes is plenty. One drink each, a public venue and a clear exit. A longer meeting adds pressure without adding information.
Should the wife talk to the bull alone before the husband meets him?
It is common that she does the first chat, but the husband should read the messages. Keep the decision to meet in person joint, and do not let the first one-on-one be the first meeting.
What if the husband does not like the bull?
Then the answer is no, even if the wife liked him. Decline politely and without a long explanation. A bull who does not meet both partners' comfort is not the right one.
