What to Do If You See the Bull in Public: Etiquette and Plans
By Juliet Monroe · updated 2026-10-19 · 3 min read

If you see the bull in public, the rule is simple: be ordinary. A nod, at most a short "hello", and then carry on with what you were doing. Public places are not the moment for a charged glance, a possessive hand on her waist or an awkward introduction. Your discretion protects the people in the story, including the bull.
This situation is not rare. Even in cities, couples bump into past dates at supermarkets, restaurants and events. In small towns, it is almost guaranteed at some point. A plan makes it forgettable.
The three scenarios
| Scenario | What it looks like | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Passing glimpse | You see him across a street or aisle | Carry on; do not point or whisper |
| Direct encounter | He walks up or is in the same queue | Brief hello, a few friendly words, move on |
| Shared social setting | Party, wedding, work event | Greet briefly, keep distance, leave if needed |
In all three, someone should decide quickly. In a couple, the wife sets the tone. If she wants to speak to him, she speaks. If she wants to walk on, you walk on.
Etiquette for the wife

- Greet him as you would any acquaintance. Warm, short, neutral.
- No inside jokes. Nothing that makes sense only to the two of you, especially if other people are close.
- No touching. A handshake at most, and only if natural.
- Do not introduce him by name unless you have agreed to. Let him offer.
- Excuse yourself within a minute. "Lovely to see you, we're just heading to the car."
If he is with a partner or friends, even more care. Imagine you are meeting an old coworker.
Etiquette for the husband
The husband's rule is silence and composure.
- Do not stare. Glancing once is fine. Fixed attention is a signal to everyone near you.
- Do not speak first unless the wife does.
- Keep your body neutral. Hands relaxed, shoulders down, no sudden step closer to her.
- Do not make comments to her in a low voice. "Is that him?" can wait.
- Smile politely if he greets you. You are simply a husband meeting an acquaintance.
- Breathe. A jolt of heat, jealousy or embarrassment is normal. It passes in about a minute.
If you are overwhelmed, say "I'm going to grab something from the car", and take a minute alone.
The bull's part

A good bull knows how to behave in public. He greets you both with courtesy, does not linger, and does not use the encounter to display familiarity. If he flirts, speaks loudly, or ignores the husband entirely, the arrangement has a problem, not the setting. What makes a good bull lists the traits to look for. If he is married himself, the stakes are higher; married bulls explains why.
Nod or ignore?
Both are acceptable, as long as you are consistent.
- A nod acknowledges a person you know. It works when neither of you is with someone who would ask questions.
- Ignoring is cleaner if you are in a crowded space with friends, colleagues or family. Make no eye contact and walk on.
Agree in advance which you will use in which settings. A common rule: nod when you are alone together, ignore when you are with others.
Plan before it happens

Add this to your privacy rules:
- Greeting rule. Nod, hello, or ignore.
- Exit rule. Who ends the encounter, and with what phrase.
- Signal. A word or gesture for "I need to leave now".
- Debrief rule. Talk about it within 24 hours; do not rehash it in the car.
- Contact rule. The bull does not message either of you about the encounter, unless it is practical.
If your social circles overlap enough that this will happen often, reconsider the match. Dating friends or coworkers usually causes more trouble than it is worth.
After the encounter
Afterwards, treat it like any small emotional event.
- Ask each other how you feel, not just what you saw.
- If the husband felt jealous, name it and let it pass. If he felt turned on, that is allowed; do not make a scene of it.
- If the wife felt awkward, ask whether the plan needs changing.
- Do not re-enact it later in front of others.
Some couples enjoy the private memory of a public brush: the secret in plain sight. If it excites you both, it can feed a later scene. Wear Her Mark in Public plays with exactly that feeling of meaning that nobody around you can read, and The Tap is a gentle exercise in keeping a signal private. Just Watch trains the stillness that helps here. If you are new to all this, begin with the free Start Here course; the discreet signals listed in cuckold signals in public and the room manners in cuckold etiquette are good companions.
Frequently asked questions
What should a cuckold husband do if he sees his wife's bull in public?
Stay calm, do not stare, let his wife set the tone, offer at most a polite nod or hello, and leave the conversation to her. Debrief at home, not on the spot.
Should we acknowledge the bull in public?
Either a nod or ignoring works. A good rule is to nod when you are alone and ignore when you are with friends, family or colleagues. Decide in advance and keep it consistent.
What if the bull approaches and starts a conversation?
Keep it short and neutral. The wife replies politely, the husband smiles, and one of you ends it with a simple excuse like heading to the car or meeting friends.
What if I feel jealous or aroused when I see him?
Both are normal. Breathe, relax your body, step away for a minute if needed and talk about it later. Do not act on it in public.
