Topping From the Bottom: meaning
Also: bottom topping, backseat dominating

Topping from the bottom is a phrase from the kink community for a particular habit: the person who is meant to receive begins to direct. A submissive says what to do, how fast, where, with what. The dominant is reduced to following a script. For some couples this is a problem. For others it is simply how they like to play.
Examples
- Giving a running commentary: "faster, no, harder, now stop."
- Setting the whole scene beforehand in detail, leaving no room for choice.
- Hinting at outcomes until the dominant partner guesses and complies.
- Complaining or sulking when things go differently than imagined.
- Telling the dominant exactly what to say.
Notice that some of this is simply communication. The difference lies in who is in charge and whether both partners are comfortable with the answer.
When it helps

Feedback is not always topping. A good bottom tells the top about limits, health issues and preferences before a scene, and uses a safeword or the traffic light system during it. A little guidance is useful, especially for newcomers who do not yet know each other's bodies. And some couples, especially a wife trying out leading for the first time, appreciate a husband who coaches kindly.
When it harms
It becomes a problem when it takes away the thing the dominant partner came for: the feeling of being in command. If she is constantly told what to say and do, the power exchange is gone and she may feel like an employee. It also happens when a submissive uses it as control, because it keeps him from the vulnerability he claims to want. Resentment follows.
Handling it as a couple

- Separate planning from playing. Negotiate the details before the scene so the scene itself can be spontaneous.
- Agree on feedback phrases. For example "yellow" for slow down and "green" for continue; see safeword.
- Let the dominant partner speak first. Wait until you are asked.
- Debrief afterwards. Share what you liked and what you would change.
- Share your requests honestly. If you need to guide, say so instead of manipulating.
- Use aftercare. Tension often disappears with a hug and a conversation.
In cuckold and hotwife couples
The scene is rarely a physical one, but the same pattern appears: a husband micromanaging his wife's date, telling her what to wear, say or do. That can drain the experience. A better route is to agree the rules in advance, as set out in Cuckold Relationship Rules, and then let her enjoy the evening. If he finds himself wanting to steer constantly, that may be worth an honest talk about control and fear.
A note on labels.
Topping from the bottom is not always a fault. Some dominants like their submissive to be bossy and treat it as part of the game: a brat dynamic, for example. What matters is agreement.

Frequently asked questions
Is topping from the bottom always bad?
No. Feedback, limits and preferences are healthy. It becomes a problem when it removes the dominant partner's role or hides control behind compliance. If both partners are happy with the balance, it is just a style of play.
How do I stop topping from the bottom?
Plan details beforehand, then hold back during the scene and trust your partner to lead. Use agreed signals like yellow or red for real needs. If you feel the urge to steer, notice it and talk about it afterwards.
