Monogamish: meaning
Also: monogamish couple, mostly monogamous

Monogamish describes the middle ground. A monogamish couple keeps its primary bond exclusive in daily life but writes certain exceptions into the agreement. The word is a blend of monogamous and the suffix -ish, and it signals relaxation rather than rebellion.
Where it comes from
The columnist Dan Savage popularised the word around 2011, using it to describe his own relationship and many others he saw. It spread quickly because it gave a name to something a lot of couples were already doing: staying devoted while carving out narrow, agreed exceptions.
What the exceptions look like
| Exception | Example |
|---|---|
| Occasional play together | A threesome once or twice a year |
| Travel rule | Play allowed on holiday only |
| Event rule | Play at a lifestyle party only |
| Third-person fantasy made real | One agreed encounter, with a chosen guest |
| Wife-only exception | A hotwife arrangement with a fixed schedule |
| Stage-limited | Until a particular date or review |
What marks the arrangement as monogamish and not, say, polyamory, is that the exceptions are limited and that the pair bond remains the centre of life.
Monogamish vs other labels
- Monogamous: no outside partners, by agreement.
- Monogamish: mostly exclusive, limited agreed exceptions.
- Open relationship: outside partners are normal and ongoing.
- Swinging: outside play, typically together.
- Polyamory: multiple loving relationships.
The boundaries are blurred, and couples may move between them over the years. Labels matter less than whether both people know the current agreement.
How hotwife and cuckold couples fit

Most hotwife and cuckold couples are monogamish in practice. A wife may see one or two chosen men a year; a husband may live in chastity but have no other relationships. The rest of life looks conventional. Writing it down helps; my Hotwife Relationship Agreement Template provides a starting format.
Why couples choose it
- It satisfies curiosity without changing the structure of the marriage.
- It keeps the emotional stakes manageable.
- It avoids the scheduling load of full openness.
- It lets couples test a fantasy before committing to more.
Pitfalls

- Vague exceptions. "Occasionally" means different things to different people.
- Creeping. One exception becomes five without discussion.
- Unequal enthusiasm. One partner agrees to be kind, not because they want it.
- No review date. Agreements need revisiting.

In my work
My stories live exactly in the monogamish zone: a marriage that stays at the centre, with a single carefully chosen event that changes its colour. Part 7: All of Me closes the free Start Here course on this note, a marriage that is more devoted after the exception, not less.
Examples in a sentence
- They called themselves monogamish: faithful in daily life, open for one holiday a year.
- Dan Savage's word gave the couple a way to explain themselves.
- A monogamish agreement worked because it was specific and reviewed.
Frequently asked questions
Who invented the word monogamish?
Writer Dan Savage popularised it around 2011 to describe couples who are mostly monogamous with agreed exceptions. The word blends 'monogamous' with the suffix '-ish' and has since entered ordinary use in relationship writing.
Is monogamish the same as an open relationship?
No. A monogamish couple limits its exceptions and keeps the pair bond as the focus. An open relationship treats outside partners as ongoing. The border between the two is not fixed, and some couples drift from one to the other.
Is a hotwife marriage monogamish?
Often, yes. Many hotwife couples agree on limited encounters, such as a few dates a year with a chosen partner, while keeping their marriage exclusive in daily life. Others are more open. Both are consensual, and the definition depends on the couple.
