Ear Licking: meaning

Ear licking is one of the most divisive triggers in ASMR. A performer places a microphone, often a binaural head with ear-shaped capsules, and makes close, wet mouth sounds against it. The result is a sound that seems to come from inside the listener's head.

What the sound is

It is not the sound of anything touching your real ear. The performer licks, kisses or breathes near the microphone, and the stereo effect makes the sound feel like it is on your own ear. Common variants include:

• Licking and kissing, with slow, wet sounds.
• Ear eating, a faster, more intense version.
• Breath and whisper between licks.
• Mouth noises close to one ear, then the other; see ear to ear and mouth sounds.
• Moans or soft words, in erotic versions.

Why it splits listeners

Reactions run from rapture to revulsion. People who enjoy it describe strong tingles, heat and a sense of intimacy. People who dislike it describe discomfort, an urge to take off the headphones or a feeling that the sound is invasive. This is a phenomenon similar to misophonia: some sounds that others find neutral trigger a strong negative reaction. If you flinch, you are not broken; the sound is simply not for you.

Why people like it

• Closeness: the sound seems inches from your head.
• Intimacy: you are being attended to in a way that suggests desire.
• Control of a sensory focus: the sound occupies all attention.
• Arousal link: ears are sensitive, and the idea of being kissed there is erotic.

Some creators use ear licking in intimate wife scenes: a wife whispering to her husband, kissing his ear and telling him a secret. It can underline the feeling of closeness before a hard confession. My own work uses it rarely; I prefer slow breath, whispers and soft kisses, which are gentler and keep the focus on the story. 1. Start at low volume. The sound is much louder than it seems.

4. Stop if it bothers you. There are plenty of other triggers.
5. Look for mild versions with breath and kisses instead of heavy licking.
