Candaulism: meaning
Also: candaulist, Candaules

Candaulism is the pleasure of exposing a beloved partner to someone else's eyes. The word is a bit academic, but the idea is very common: a man proud of his wife wants her admired.
The story behind the word
The Greek historian Herodotus tells of Candaules, a king of Lydia in the 7th century BCE. Proud of his queen's beauty, he insisted that his bodyguard Gyges hide in the bedroom and see her undressed. The queen noticed, felt humiliated, and gave Gyges a choice: die, or kill the king and take the throne. Gyges chose the second. In the tale, Candaules pays the price for showing what should not have been shown.
Today the word names the arousal pattern in the story, without the grim ending. Psychologists and sexologists describe it as a form of voyeurism and exhibitionism shared by a couple.
What candaulism looks like now

- Photos shared with the wife's consent and enthusiasm.
- Dressing for attention, with the husband choosing the outfit.
- Public play where she is admired and the husband enjoys it.
- Hosting a gaze in the home, with guests or a chosen partner who sees her.
- Fantasy only. Talk or audio in which he imagines her being seen.
The consent difference from the myth is everything. In the legend she did not know. Here she does, wants it and sets the limits. Without that, it is just a violation.
How it fits with cuckolding
Candaulism overlaps with cuckolding but is not the same.
| Candaulism | Cuckolding | |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Her being seen | Her being with someone |
| Third person | Viewer | Partner |
| Husband feels | Pride, exposure | Jealousy, arousal, humbling |
| Touch | Not required | Usually involved |
Many couples mix them. The husband who loves wife watching may begin with candaulism, then move on to a full hotwife arrangement. The husband who never wants anyone to touch her may stay with display alone.
Rules that work

- She decides what is shown, to whom and how far it goes.
- Both partners can pause at any time.
- Privacy is protected; no images leave the couple's control.
- Aftercare happens, because attention can be intoxicating or unsettling.
For the husband who hears the idea as a fantasy rather than a plan, Cuckold Fantasy vs Reality is a good guide to what changes when it becomes real.
In audio
My stories use the same ingredient in a different shape: the husband stays in his chair and watches her be admired, as in Part 4: Just Watch. It is a free, private way to feel the pride and the pull. Begin with Start Here if you have not heard the course.
One-line version: Candaulism: arousal from exposing or showing your partner to others, named for King Candaules in Herodotus.

Frequently asked questions
How do you pronounce candaulism?
Roughly 'kan-DAW-liz-um', stressing the second syllable. It derives from the name Candaules, pronounced 'kan-DAW-leez'. In everyday use you will mostly see it in writing, not speech.
Is candaulism a fetish?
It is a form of voyeuristic and exhibitionist arousal shared by a couple. Whether it is a fetish depends on how central it is. For many people it is simply one preference among several, within a consensual marriage.
What is the difference between candaulism and wife watching?
Candaulism is about her being displayed or exposed to others. Wife watching is about the husband seeing her with someone else. The two overlap, and many couples enjoy both.
