Autosuggestion: meaning
Also: self-suggestion, self-hypnosis suggestion

Autosuggestion means you are both the voice and the listener. The term goes back to Émile Coué, a French pharmacist whose line "every day, in every way, I am getting better and better" became famous. Coué insisted that effort worked against the idea; the phrase should be repeated gently, with expectation, not strained out.
How it works
Repeated words build familiarity, and familiarity shapes attention and mood. When you say a sentence calmly twenty times, your mind starts to treat it as a normal thought. Add relaxation, and the sentence lands softer. Add a vivid picture, and it lands deeper. This is the same mechanism as suggestibility in hypnosis, with the difference that you control the script.
Forms of autosuggestion

- Affirmations, short statements spoken or written; see affirmation.
- Mantras, a single phrase repeated as a rhythm; see mantra.
- Self-hypnosis, where you give yourself a relaxation sequence and then your lines.
- Journalling, where writing a thought daily does the same work on paper.
- Recorded self-talk, where you record your own voice and play it back.
Where it helps and where it does not
Autosuggestion helps with habits and feelings: confidence, calm, a preference you already lean towards. It is weak against facts. Saying "I am not jealous" while you are truly hurt just feels hollow. The better method is to name the feeling and pair it with something true: "I can feel this and still be safe." The guide Hotwife Jealousy Journal shows a written version of this.
In cuckold practice

Husbands use autosuggestion for small, steady things: wearing the ring and touching it, reminding yourself that your pride is in her happiness, practising calm when she texts. The free nightly sessions at Queen of Spades Affirmations give you the lines to repeat back, and the husband's role is the speaking part. The guide Mantra Training lays out a four-week routine.
A simple routine
- Choose one sentence. Positive, present tense, short.
- Relax first. Three slow breaths, or a short countdown.
- Say it ten times, slowly, with the feeling you want.
- Close with a count up so you return to normal.
- Do it daily for a month, and judge by how things feel, not by how the words sound.
Outside suggestion versus self-suggestion
A recording, a voice and a character add atmosphere and intensity that you cannot supply for yourself. Many men use both: the recorded session for the fantasy, autosuggestion for the daytime reminders. Begin at Start Here and add your own lines as they become clear.
One-line version: Autosuggestion: giving yourself repeated suggestions, such as affirmations or self-hypnosis, to strengthen habits and feelings you already want.
Examples in a sentence
- Autosuggestion works best when the sentence is something you already half believe.
- He ends each evening with ten minutes of calm autosuggestion about the ring.
- Coué taught that autosuggestion should be gentle, not forced.
Frequently asked questions
Does autosuggestion really work?
It works modestly for habits, mood and confidence, mainly through repetition and relaxation. It does not override facts or strong feelings, and it needs patience. Used consistently with realistic, positive lines over several weeks, many people find it a useful, free companion to other methods, and nothing about it requires belief or special skill.
What is the difference between autosuggestion and affirmations?
Affirmations are one form of autosuggestion: short, positive statements said aloud or silently. Autosuggestion is the broader practice, including self-hypnosis, mantras and visualisation, in which you deliberately give your own mind repeated suggestions, usually while relaxed.
