Fractionation: meaning

Also: fractionated relaxation, up and down, drop and wake

Fractionation: Fractionation is a hypnosis technique in which a person is taken into trance, brought partly back to alertness, and taken down again, repeatedly. Each return makes the next descent easier and deeper. It is the engine behind many quick drops and deepeners.

Fractionation means taking someone into relaxation, bringing them part way back up, and taking them down again, over and over. Each cycle makes the descent smoother and often deeper than the one before.

Where the word comes from

The term was popularised in 20th-century hypnosis teaching, and it comes from the idea of dividing the process into portions: a fraction of the way out, a fraction back in. In practice, you will hear it described as "up and down", "drop and wake" or "deepening by repetition".

How it works in practice

A simple cycle:

  1. Down: slow breath, heavy limbs, eyes closed, count down.
  2. Up: count up from three, open the eyes for a moment, a small stretch.
  3. Down again: close the eyes on cue and drop.
  4. Repeat three to six times, with a slightly deeper suggestion each time.

By the third or fourth drop the relaxation arrives faster. You are not "losing" anything on the way up; your mind is practising the skill of letting go, and each practice makes the next easier.

Why it works

Part of the effect is expectation: the second drop feels familiar. Part is attention: the contrast between alert and relaxed teaches the mind what relaxation is. And part is simple habit, since a cycle done repeatedly becomes a pattern. The technique does not need belief, only cooperation.

Fractionation in my sessions

Part 2 of Start Here is built almost entirely on this idea: "up and down and up again", with the ring touch as an anchor that carries each drop. After a few listens, a touch of the ring is enough to bring calm. The whole free course is at Start Here, and the deepest stage, Part 7, chains every cue together after a long fractionated descent.

Where it fits among techniques

TechniqueRole
InductionGets you into trance
FractionationDeepens it by repeating the drop
TriggerLinks a cue to a reaction
MantraRepeats a phrase to settle the state

You can use fractionation for any goal, from sleep to focus. In erotic hypnosis, the repeated drop pairs naturally with arousal: each lift lets the want build, each fall hands it over.

What it will and will not do

Fractionation makes relaxation easier and sets the stage for suggestions. It does not remove control, and you can come out whenever you like. If a session leaves you groggy, a glass of water and a minute to stretch resets you fully. It is a skill like any other; the more you listen, the quicker the descent.

Frequently asked questions

Does fractionation make hypnosis deeper?

It tends to. Each cycle teaches the mind to relax faster, so later drops feel smoother and often deeper. It works through familiarity and contrast, not force. Most listeners notice the difference by the third or fourth cycle.

Is fractionation safe?

Yes for healthy adults. You are always partly aware and can stop by opening your eyes. Do not use it while driving. If you feel dizzy afterwards, sit for a minute, stretch and drink water before standing.

How many times should I cycle?

Three to six cycles is typical. More can feel repetitive for a beginner. Quality matters more than number: a gentle lift and a slow drop do more than a hurried sequence. Start with three and see how you respond.
