Binaural Beats: meaning

Also: binaural beat, binaural tones, brainwave audio

binaural beats meaning
Binaural Beats: Binaural beats are an auditory effect produced when each ear hears a slightly different tone, so the brain perceives a third pulsing tone at the difference. Claims of brain entrainment are mixed, but the sound can support relaxation when played through headphones.

Binaural beats happen when two pure tones of slightly different pitch are played, one in each ear. Say 200 Hz in the left ear and 210 Hz in the right. The brain perceives a beat at 10 Hz, the difference. The effect needs headphones; through speakers the tones mix in the air and the effect disappears.

What people claim

Marketers say different beat frequencies guide the brain into states: delta for sleep, theta for deep relaxation, alpha for calm, beta for focus. The idea is that brainwaves follow the beat, a process called entrainment.

Results vary because studies use different tones, durations and listeners. A fair summary: binaural beats are a pleasant background that may help some people relax, and they do not control the mind.

Use in hypnosis audio

Creators add binaural tones under a voice to give a steady, slow hum. The benefit is mostly that the sound is calming and gives the mind something simple to follow. They pair well with whisper ASMR and a slow induction. The guide binaural vs whisper ASMR compares the two for trance work. Do not expect a tone to do what a good script does.

Tips for listening

Tips for listening, Juliet Monroe
  1. Use stereo headphones. Earbuds are fine.
  2. Keep volume low. The beat should sit under the voice.
  3. Start with 10 to 20 minutes.
  4. Pick one frequency band, such as theta around 4 to 7 Hz for deep relaxation.
  5. Stop if it irritates. Some people find the pulsing uncomfortable.

Cautions

People with epilepsy are generally advised to avoid flashing visuals, and some also avoid rhythmic audio; a sentence of caution is enough, and anyone with a seizure history should ask first. Do not use binaural beats while driving.

Binaural beats versus binaural audio

Binaural beats versus binaural audio, Juliet Monroe

A recording described as binaural audio uses spatial recording to place sounds around the head. That is a different technique from binaural beats, though many listeners mix up the terms. In my free sessions I use close, spatial whisper and light tones, never as the main engine. See Part 6, Queen of Spades for the style. Related: isochronic tones.

A practical test

Play the same ten-minute relaxation twice, once with a binaural layer and once without, on different days at the same time. Rate calm from one to ten before and after. If the scores differ by little, the tone is not adding much for you, and you can drop it. If it helps, keep it. A personal test beats any claim on a product page.

Frequently asked questions

Do binaural beats work?

They reliably create a perceived beat, and some people find them relaxing. Evidence for direct brainwave control is weak and mixed. Treat them as a calming backdrop, not a substitute for a script.

Do you need headphones for binaural beats?

Yes. Each ear must hear a different tone. Through speakers the tones blend in the air and the effect vanishes. Stereo earbuds or headphones are enough.

Are binaural beats the same as binaural audio?

No. Binaural beats are two slightly different tones that create a perceived third beat. Binaural audio is a recording technique that places sounds in 3D space around the head.
